Firstly I would like to say that my aim of this report was to get my views across, my grammar in places will be lazy so my apologies.
I have been a FIFA fan and player for many years now. I have watched the game grow each year and would like to thank you for the experience I have had playing it, which leads me to writing to you today.
With the latest next generation consoles and the more firepower you have in creating a realistic game I have written a report on the latest installment FIFA 16.
I understand that you may receive countless emails requesting ideas and changes but I would really like you to read what I have to say as I want to help make the best game possible. Your big rivals PES are getting more of a fan base because of their realistic approach to the game but it will never become bigger nor will I ever switch.
FIFA 16 is all about being realistic and I love that. I want to start a career mode and feel like it's really happening and this year it's the best ever, but still there is so much more that you can give to the players.
I'm going to start by commenting on visual gameplay as I feel this is the most important section. With all the comments I make I will refer to realism because that's what I feel FIFA needs to become.
The players themselves are the best we have seen in FIFA but they still don't feel right. The complexion feels too cartoon like, not a lot of fine detail. Darker areas need to be addressed like eyes, ears and mouth. With that being said I think more movement of the face needs to be added; for example when a player shouts you see their face crease and veins bulge. During a real game players are touching their hair and face and parts of their body, why not add more motions like players pulling their own shirts in frustration, having more movement in players fingers so clenched fists. Another big improvement is tattoos, there are so many players with tattoos and there are a few that have them in FIFA 16, Prince Boateng, Hamsik and of course Messi. Messi is the only one with arm tattoos the rest are just neck. It would be a great visual to have players tattoos in the game it would make it much more realistic.
I think the players hair has been improved greatly, finally it has movement but the players hair is the same all through the year, why not create a new wet engine where if it's raining or snowing the players shirts, hair and skin react to the weather where all hair types become darker and flat. I want to see rain drops falling off the players hair and face, this would change rainy matches entirely and make a more realistic experience.
The fans are much improved from previous FIFA games but they still can be improved. I find that the fans need to be more involved with the game; for example in a real game fans cheer and clap for good play, good tackles and good saves. The fans sarcastically cheer when the opposition takes it out of play or misplaces a pass. I want to see this in game as this will create more of an Adrenalin enhanced feel because when the opposition are on the attack and loose the ball giving a chance for the counter the fans should be on there feet and cheering as if they have a chance to score. I'm sure there are a few employees working on FIFA that have been to a football match so recreating the fans influence and involvement in the game should be easily done.
I understand that when the ball goes out of play and into the stands it disappears, but why not keep the ball visible, interact the fans with the ball, get them to move out the way or get a group of people to try and catch it, this happens in every football match why is it not used in FIFA?
Similar to having seasonal features for the players why not the fans. The fans look the same all through the year, why not add winter clothing.
Premier league games are usually sold out so each seat is filled but capital one cup games are less so but yet each time you play all the seats are full. To make it more realistic there should be empty seats scattered around.
During the game fans are up on there feet and walking up the Isles to get refreshments, now this is a minor detail but it still increases realistic gameplay. I'm not saying to add fans that are eating but random people walking back to a seat or up and down the isles would be a clever improvement.
The pitch for me is near to perfect, but still there are a few things that bug me. The goals have not changed in years, the net graphics are fine but each stadium in real life has different goals. Every goal in the BPL is supported with 2 struts but yet why on FIFA is there 4, this is a huge visual mistake as the nets themselves don't look proper, it leaves this wave effect instead of it being straight. The grass needs to be greener. The Emirates has the best pitch in the country yet I don't feel like it in the game, I feel it's too generic and for carpet playing surface the pitch wear is too fast. You have incorporated the impact engine but yet the microphones are still static, it's unlikely the ball will strike them every game but when they do why can't they be interactive when hit.
I would like to see more grass movement, for example when sliding in or shooting grass and dirt flicks up off the players boots and grass when wet sticks to players shirts and skin.
In early FIFA the bench used to have empty seats and slowly the subs became visas lie and this year there are animated, however why do we just see the subs. Where are the coaches, assistants and physio's. Also the managers are always on there feet which doesn't happen. They need to be sat down and mobile. Up on there feet when they need to give instruction, likewise when their team scores.
Speaking about physio's, when a player is injured they either stay on the floor or they walk off the pitch and have a sit down on the touch line and sometimes the player will limp off as you make a sub only to find out they broke their ankle when looking at your emails after the game. This is unrealistic, physio's should be on the pitch or on the sidelines to provide treatment, even if you only see them briefly it still makes it more realistic.
The players behaviour during a game is important to show in FIFA. Introducing small confrontation between two players is a good feature but why just 2, I understand that FIFA is promoting a good sport and not bad behaviour but small confrontations between more players would be a great feature. Have players running in to break up a bust up and the ref stepping in to diffuse any situation. There are many rivalries in football and these games behave differently from the others, fans are more vocal, players are pumped so there needs to be more of a rivalry feel to certain matches other than them all being the same.
When a player is red carded in FIFA I feel as if it's scripted, the player argues a little and just walks off the pitch and the other players don't care however in real life players surround the ref and players are impacted mentally. The player getting sent off is angry so why not show this. Have the player shouting and have teammates walk off with him but not for every red card, there needs to be many animations for bookings not just the same over and over.
When a team scores a goal; for example Giroud for Arsenal, he will celebrate however and that's that. I want to see a more realistic celebration system. If Giroud scores a goal in the 60th minute we can celebrate as normal but the other players need to have more of an impact in celebrating too and not just 2 other players coming over with Giroud. Get more players rushing over and huddling to celebrate. If it's a 90th minute goal the celebration needs to be more over the top. Running with the whole team and having more enthusiasm. I love the fact players can now interact with the sideline camera but there needs to be more camera angles on celebration.
In regards to gameplay it's self there are a few areas that need looking at.
Slide tackles are improved but I can't help notice a certain animation feels wrong. A player is running towards goal and is slide tackled from behind yet the player running falls on his back with his legs way out in front of him? Surly he would fall on his front or side not on his back. In regards to tackles I still want to see more animations of different tackles and players falling.
There needs to be more of a connection between the player falling and the the way he interacts with the ground. Looking closely the player never makes contact with the floor just floats above it, of course you don't notice in game but when the camera switches to a replay you can see the awkwardness of the fall.
I have noticed that sometimes when the ball hits a player or the goalkeeper saves it, the ball never comes in contact with the other, I find that the ball doesn't react well with the keepers which needs to be addressed as there is too much of a gap between the ball supposedly hitting the keepers gloves then bouncing away.
The players need to interact with the goal nets, at the moment if a player is running towards goal and clears the ball off the line, he stumbles and rolls into the net but the net doesn't move the player just rolls in a static position. In real life the player would either fall into the net or hold his hands out to stop himself, this needs to be brought into FIFA, having the players fall into the net and have interactions just like the ball does.
Passing in the game is great, but still I feel like it needs to be more accurate and easier for us as players to play intricate passes and score good team goals. The likes of Arsenal and Barcelona play small and key defender splitting passes yet I find this hard to do in FIFA.
Something that's been improved over the years is the dribbling, running in different pathways is very effective in career mode but I still feel like the defenders are too strong when it comes to skill moves, I understand the timing is essential but to less confident users skills are less effective. Maybe introducing a new feature on skills allowing players to show off a move and beat a player and the defender is out of the picture. Messi put Boateng on his back which the whole world saw, I would love to see this in FIFA, where defenders are humiliated every so often.
On countless occasions when I'm running with the ball another one of my players will cross the same path as me instead of getting into space, this is very frustrating as it ruins part of play and doesn't happen in real life. Also when shooting I find that one of my players will block my shot from standing right in the way, this needs to be looked at whether it's a player focus where they move out the way of shots or passes.
The refs advantage sometimes is completely off. It shouldn't be so prompt. Handballs for penalty shot are far too instant. I have scored many goals after the whistle has gone for the penalty. If the opposition has the ball In the middle of the field and it's a clear handball from them, but play is back in my favour I still have to go back to get my free kick even though I have it. This needs to be addressed and I don't see refs holding their arms out giving advantage, this may be in the game but I haven't seen it.
Speaking about refs I feel as if they should be real life refs that are used and have more gems tires and movements and having both the linesmen and referees talk about decisions making the camera angles switch between the two.
I want to talk about something I'm most frustrated about and that's the commentary. Each year of FIFA it's the same with no real differences. I hear the same intro for each game, the same comments on looking forward to the next, it's extremely lazy and makes the game become boring. From the first game of the season to the last its the same, there is no enthusiasm and expanded talk. There needs to be vast improvements to the way they speak especially when a goal is scored, you score a penalty or a 40 yard screamer it's the same. If Martin Tyler is the only commentator then he needs to sound more excited, for example when England beat Germany 5-1, Owen grabbed 3 and Heskey the last, Martin Tyler should sound like that for all goals scored. There needs to be more commentators for the BPL and Clive and Andy Townsend need to be commentating the Champions Cup. I understand PES has the rights which breaks my heart because if FIFA had champions league it would change everything and create an breathtaking game. If there is anything you can add regarding the champions league to make it more authentic without infringing any copyright please do as it creates such a better feel of game.
Getting back to the commentators, they need to interact more with what's going on in the game, highlight good passes, skills, runs, shots and so much more. Start shouting when a goal is scored in the last minute to win the game not just "he's done it" in the same tone of voice. If you can take snippets from previous real life games in implement them into the game, let the players relive historic moments. The commentary changes the way you play a game. The excitement and the drive of going for the win.
It's the last game of the season and you score a late winner to clinch the title... I want to hear the commentary from the goal Aguero scored against QPR, I want my heart to be in my mouth and I want to smile as soon as I hear the goal, that is real, that is what FIFA should have and feel like.
Regarding commentators I want to talk about progression in the seasons. As we play in career mode I want the players, teams and commentators to know the severity of late games in the league or cups. A semi final needs to feel like a semi final so too a final. Winning the league or qualifying for Europe needs to be outlined and the players on the pitch need to look like they are happy or sad, winning or losing. It's the same each game no matter what.
The stadiums are fantastic, all BPL teams have stadiums finally and they look great however on some stadiums I feel a little disappointed certain sections are less detailed than others and it's usually one component, which is the boxes and executive areas. Looking closely at the Emirates the restaurant level and box level are blurred and you can't see any people. I want to see this corrected so you can look at the people, inside the stadium and waking around the different levels. At Wembley you are able to see inside the boxes which is great but this needs to be included for all stadiums.
Career mode has and always will be FIFAs best creation, it's the mode I play the most and treasure the most and over the years I've always wanted to see certain things but are yet to feature. Firstly it's about a real life setting; for example I am heavily influenced by watching games and I pick a team to do a career with based on a players and games over time. 10 games into the BPL I started an Arsenal Carter mode and all I wanted to do was try and replicate the real life table. I managed to get Arsenal to the place they were but yet Chelsea were top and Leicester were near the bottom, this makes it unrealistic and forces me to try forget about it and focus on Arsenal. With this being said at the beginning of a career you're given the option for the summer transfer window which is great but why not add "current results and standings" giving the players the choice to start wherever their team is at the current time. This option would be a fantastic feature and create a more realistic experience and more of a challenge.
I want to see a new managerial system in the next FIFA. I want real life managers. There has been much controversy this year with managers, LVG and The so called special one being centre of attention but when playing FIFA it's usually all about the players and so and so wanting a new contract every 5 minutes which by the way is unrealistic and needs to change.
I think a wide selection of managers should be added to the game and by doing this would change the game incredibly. Having camera close ups of Arsene Wenger during a BPL game would be incredible. Managers shouting and talking to officials. Create a new engine where by you're playing as Jose Mourinho and you're sacked from Chelsea, however United are struggling and you are there to take LVG's place. Of course this idea requires lots of time and thought but it's something that will create a fantastic new experience. Have the option to use real life managers because Every Carter mode I have done on FIFA I have never made myself a manager I have always taken a real life name and I'm sure others do the same. For those that choose to play themselves have a personalised look other than skin tone and body type. Create a manager just like we create a player.
With regards to staff coaches and assistants should be added. Arsenal could hire Henry and Robert Pires like they have done in real life to help and coaches could be ex footballers which can help the clubs performance dramatically.
The better physio's you have the faster the players recovery time would be.
Transfers have been improved but I don't like the fact I can't search for a certain rated player. I think there should be additional options to have "player rating between" that way when I'm searching for a striker for Arsenal I don't have to scroll through players from the English league 2 who unfortunately won't get into my team. The scouting system is good however I feel it's not laid out the best, where you have to switch between two windows with players found and what there looking for. It's frustrating how only one scout can be in one country even if I want to search for multiple positions and different qualities. Also how even if I remove a player from the search they are re scouted a few weeks later so I'm getting duplicate searches.
The media in FIFA is again always the same, I think it should have a greater influence on the game. Maybe more transfer speculations and managerial issues. It should focus on injures and upcoming games. Also the managers press conferences are pointless. Begging up one or the other and that's it, it should be a lot more realistic in terms or real life press questions, the comments on losing a game and winning. Maybe making it more like football manager for the PC
Something that I have always wished for in career mode is after season customisation. Finishing a season and starting a new year with the same kits and sponsors is something that forces me to not continue with more seasons. It gets too boring and looks the same throughout. I think a new kit editor engine would be awesome. You have the creation centre so why not incorporate it into career mode, when a season ends you get options for sponsorship deals; for example Arsenal signed a new deal with puma and are sponsored by Fly Emirates. Say I've finished my first season. Fly Emirates give me £100million deal for the new year but Samsung offer £110million. By choosing Samsung it gives the club more money and a new look on their kits making it feel like a completely different season. Just like the kits, change the design and the colours for the new season. Creation centre offered a wide range of kit designs from different sponsors, this was a great add on to FIFA and I'm sad that next gen users can't access it's features. 3 seasons in using the same kits is monotonous, how about a brand new kit with new colours, it's a game changer.
Nike might want to sponsor Arsenal again so they offer a new deal or they might not so you'll have to stay with Puma, sponsors won't be each season but 2 or 3 down the line a bigger better sponsor may become interested, this would be a great concept for lower league teams getting higher ranked and getting into the BPL. Having a wide selection of sponsors would make the season much more exciting, especially playing in new kits that are fully customisable like the creation centre. Also when given the option to create a home and away kit, for those who don't have alternate kits there should be an option to create one with a cost of course. This would give the impression of a lower club becoming bigger and have more of a stature against the bigger clubs.
With regards to the customisation In FIFA, it's something I always love doing. Putting the latest boots on players, tight fit kits and high socks, however the create a player section hasn't changed in years. I would like to see this improved with many different options like more realistic facial features, kit options and hair styles. Maybe even tattoos for pros and created players. With all the animation improvements I spoke about earlier it would make sense creating more realistic looking players to put into the game.
Another thing I've always wanted to see was stadium customisation. Lower league teams and higher teams are always in the media for new stadiums and when a lower team comes into the prem it is unrealistic they will stay in the BPL with a 12,000 seater stadium so within career mode and outside there can be a stadium creator where you can edit and create a dream stadium. Whether it's a new modern 20,000 seater for Southend United or a 100,000 mega stadium for Chelsea. Including lower tier designs, executive areas and roofing, also adding goal aesthetics and pitch design, including fine detail for types of seats and colours for each component. This would be a fantastic idea and it will allow a community of players to create their best stadium designs with thousands of possibilities.
I feel that FIFA for me is the biggest game each year, I'm a lover of football and always will be and all I want to see is the perfect game, perfect is impossible because there's always things to be added. The possibilities are endless but I strongly believe with the points that I have made in this report will make FIFA a more fantastic experience.
You say that you work on the things the fans want to see and I'm one of the biggest. Realism is key and it's what needs to be strived for.
If you have taken the time to read this I am truly grateful. It's been a pleasure to write to you and I would love to hear your thoughts about my report.
Let's help make a beautiful game.
